FAQ's

What is aluminum cove base for a gym floor?

Aluminum cove base is the vented wall base installed around the perimeter of a gym floor. Gym Cove is extruded aluminum, powder-coated in 15 standard colors, and sold in 4 in x 3 in x 8 ft lengths. Longer lengths mean fewer seams, and it screws to the wall, so there is no adhesive to fail.

How does Gym Cove vent a wood gym floor?

Gym Cove has a continuous ventilation option. A spacer holds the base just off the wall, which leaves a continuous venting gap between the wall and the cove base around the whole perimeter. Gym Cove reports the airflow at 5 times standard rubber vent cove base with a 1/16 in spacer, and 10 times with a 1/8 in spacer. These are the manufacturer’s figures, not independent test results.

What colors does Gym Cove come in?

Gym Cove comes in 15 standard colors. They are red, cardinal red, international orange, orange, gold, yellow, black, green, dark green, clear anodized aluminum, burgundy, purple, navy blue, royal blue, and brown. Custom colors are available on request. Matching color screw heads, touch-up paint, and caulk help the base and corners look finished.

How is Gym Cove installed?

Gym Cove is mechanically fastened to the wall instead of glued. The manufacturer drawing shows #12 square drive pan head screws, and matching color screw heads are available. With no adhesive, the base can be removed and put back if water gets under the floor, and it eliminates the risk of adhesive obstructing the ventilation opening.

Is there a minimum order for Gym Cove?

Yes. Gym Cove is sold by the 8 ft piece, with a minimum purchase of 200 linear feet, which is 25 pieces. Lead time is 3 to 6 weeks, so order ahead of your floor project. Cast aluminum inside corners and outside corners are sold separately in the same 15 colors.

Why is ventilation important for a wood gym floor?

Wood gym floors expand and contract as temperature and humidity change. Vented cove base allows air to circulate around the floor perimeter, helping the flooring system respond to changing environmental conditions. Gym Cove provides perimeter ventilation while covering the expansion gap between the floor and wall.
