Mop Systems

Gym floor mop systems are the daily-care tools that keep wood and synthetic sports floors clean without damaging the finish. Choose your gym floor mop by job: dust mops remove dry grit before foot traffic grinds it into the finish; damp mops like the MopSmart and CourtClean lift sweat, body oil, and spills using a neutral cleaner and minimal water; and perspiration mops handle quick wipe-ups during games and practices. Never flood or wet-mop a wood gym floor; standing water can cup boards and lift the finish. Damp means barely damp. Replacement pads and towels are in Mop Heads, and handles are in Mop Handles.

How to Mop a Gym Floor: Daily and Weekly Routine

Every day (or before every practice and game)

  • Dust mop the whole floor first with a clean, treated or microfiber dust mop. Walk the length of the court and overlap your passes so you don’t leave lines of grit.
  • Keep the dust mop head on the floor and turn it without lifting, so you don’t drop what it picked up. Shake it out or vacuum it outside the gym.
  • Spot-clean spills and sweat right away with a perspiration mop or a damp towel. Don’t let liquid sit on the floor.

Damp mopping (daily for heavy use, otherwise 2 to 3 times a week)

  • Always dust mop first, so the damp pad isn’t pushing grit across the finish.
  • Use a neutral gym floor cleaner mixed at the label rate, and only the cleaner your floor or finish maker approves.
  • Barely dampen the pad or towel with a sprayer or a MopSmart or CourtClean system. Never pour or flood water on a wood floor.
  • Work in sections and swap to a clean pad when the one you’re using looks dirty.
  • The floor should dry within a minute or two. If it stays wet longer, you’re using too much liquid.

Every week

  • Launder microfiber pads and towels on warm with no fabric softener or bleach, and air dry or tumble dry on low.
  • Check the walk-off mats at every entrance. Most grit that scratches a gym floor walks in on shoes.
  • Inspect the mop heads and replace any that are matted, torn, or no longer pick up dust.

Never

  • Use a string mop and bucket on a wood floor, or use oil soaps, ammonia, vinegar, or household cleaners.

Mop Systems - Frequently Asked Questions

Most facilities need two kinds of gym floor mop: a wide dust mop for daily grit, and a damp mop system such as MopSmart or CourtClean, used with a neutral gym floor cleaner, to remove sweat and body oil. Wide damp mop units are our best-selling mop systems.

A dust mop is used dry to pick up grit and dust that would scratch the finish. A damp mop uses a barely moistened pad with cleaner to lift sweat, oil, and spills. Dust mop first, then damp mop.

No. A string mop puts down too much water, and standing water can cup boards and lift the finish. Gym floor damp mops use a pad that is only lightly moistened, so the floor dries in minutes.

Dust mop every day and before games. Damp mop daily in heavy-use gyms, or 2 to 3 times a week otherwise. Follow your floor maintenance guide.

Yes. Dust and damp mops work on synthetic and rubber floors too. Use the cleaner your floor maker recommends.

Replace a pad when it is matted, torn, or stops picking up dust. Replacements are in Mop Heads.
