Gym Floor Maintenance: Daily, Weekly, and Monthly

    • Daily: dust mop the floor with a treated cotton or microfiber dust mop before practice and events, and blot spills right away.
    • Weekly: dust mop first, then damp mop with a neutral pH gym floor cleaner. Wring the mop until it is only slightly damp, with no puddles.
    • Monthly: deep clean with Tac-Tite pH Neutral Gym Floor Cleaner at 2 oz. per gallon of water, then check for worn finish under the baskets and along sidelines.
    • Every day at the doors: keep walk-off mats at entrances and allow only clean, non-marking athletic shoes on the court.
    • Winter: dust mop salt and ice melt right away, and keep indoor relative humidity around 35 to 50%.

Gym Floor Care - Frequently Asked Questions

Most school gyms need a dust mop for daily grit, a damp mop system for weekly cleaning, and a neutral pH gym floor cleaner. Add walk-off mats at the doors, a scuff mark remover, and gym floor covers if the floor hosts assemblies or events. Together these cover the routine gym floor care that keeps the finish lasting.

Dust mop a gym floor at least once a day, before practice or events. Damp mop it no less than once a week with a neutral pH cleaner. Every 4 to 6 weeks, do a deeper clean and check for worn finish. Our monthly and seasonal gym floor maintenance guide walks through each step.

Use a neutral pH cleaner made for finished wood sports floors. Half-Time Fast Drying Gym Floor Cleaner mixes at 1 quart to 2 gallons of water (8:1). Tac-Tite pH Neutral Gym Floor Cleaner mixes at 2 oz. per gallon. Both are in our gym floor cleaners category. Never leave standing water on wood.

A dust mop is used dry every day to pick up dust and grit that scratch the finish. A damp mop is used with a diluted cleaner, usually once a week, to lift sweat, body oils, and fine dirt a dust mop leaves behind. Our gym floor mop systems include both kinds.

Cover the court with gym floor covers before assemblies, graduations, or other events with chairs and street shoes. Keep walk-off mats at every entrance so grit stays off the court. On game and practice days, allow only clean, non-marking athletic shoes on the floor.

Dust mop salt and ice melt right away after a snowy day, before it gets ground into the finish. Then use an ice melt film remover such as Trax-Buster Ice Melt Film Remover and damp mop per its instructions. Keep extra mats just inside the doors in winter to catch slush.
